Acute and suspension of chronic (A38)
Question: Dr. Luc, my question is about the suspension of a chronic remedy
during an acute illness. Recently, both my children have had fairly severe
and dragged out acute winter colds, flu's, earaches, etc.. These have tended
to drag on and move them through several acute remedies over about 2 weeks.
During this time that acute remedies were used to handle the illnesses, we
suspended their chronic remedies However, I definitely noticed emotional
changes that concerned me with the suspension of the chronic remedies that
had been very well handled previously with the chronic remedies -- before
each illness. My question is this: it is ever appropriate to still continue
with a chronic at the same time you are treating acutes to avoid back
sliding to old symptoms like this? If so, how is this best managed? Thank
you so much for you time and generous wisdom!
Answer: excellent question. I am sure you referring to the flu/cold that has
been going around since October till now and for which the flu vaccination
of this year was inadequate to help. This has been one of the worst viruses
going around for some time as it quickly lead to congestion in sinuses and
upper bronchioli, especially difficult for small children to deal with
(especially if they suffer additionally from asthma and aor allergies).
Pulsatilla was usually the remedy bringing relief (had to be in at least a
200c potency or higher). During such acute, and this one is truly an acute
disease suspending the chronic disease, we need to suspend the chronic
remedy. However it is very common that emotional symptoms are accompanying
such acute illness, in this case of fly clinginess, irritability and
weeping...So sometimes they might actually relate to emotional symptoms seen
in the chronic phase, but this is no reason to use the chronic remedy at the
same time. It is a good lesson for the homeopath even in acute cases to look
at emotional changes.
Warm regards
