Selective mutism

niece, age 16 years was diagnosed when she was a child as having
'selective mutism.' As a young child even pre-school age , she was always
very shy and clingy to her mother. She would not speak to anyone outside
the immediate family circle.. and even in school wouldn't answer questions
in class and would only'mouth silently' the answers , and then only after
much prodding and if the teacher insisted. My sister took her to many
specialists and therapists... Finally she was put on a very low dose
prozac for a time, but that was abandoned because no one seemed sure
whether it was helping enough. There is a definite familial link thru the
maternal side with
both anxiety and depressive disorders.. My niece is in the 11th grade now
and things are still no better~~ I really would appreciate your
professional opinion in this matter.. Does this disorder have a genetic

Answer: Dear Rose: I know there are even support groups and conferences
now about selective mutism. It is interesting that we are able to invent
those names but conventional medicine has few answers for this apart from
behavior therapy and longterm therapy. We translate selective mutism in
our homeopathic terms, "Timidity appearing in public" and " "Timidity to
talk in public" We have several remedies and the two most outspoken ones
are Lycopodium and Silica. As you can see we have remedies for this
condition but allopathy has no drugs available so far. I would forget
about prozac. People should know that some studies have shown that Prozac
among other most used antidepressants have little more value than a
placebo. This expression of your niece is a psoric expression (the genetic
miasmatic background) and as you say yourself, there is anxiety in the
family. I have no doubt that a good homeopath could resolve most of the
selectrive mutism cases in a short time and give these children a full
life.
