Temperaments
Question:
Dr. Luc, You write about the different temperaments in your
professional textbooks. Can you help us to briefly understand the
temperament types and how they are considered in good homeopathic
prescribing as well as what types of disease are associated with them? Thank
you for the excellent blogs!
Answer:
The four temperaments by Hippocrates (yes the father of medicine)
are Sanguine (corresponds to Fire in TCM), Phlegmatic (Earth type), Nervous
(water type) and Choleric or Wood type (Liver/gall bladder). The homeopath
if knowledge of this, and even more if he knows basics of TCM can greatly
use this for different reasons. First to find the simillimum. Second also to
see if a new layer is formed. In other words if a person changes suddenly
from one temperament to another (say from Phlegmatic to choleric) one needs
to suspect the formation of a new layer. And this can of course be formed
by anything, especially emotions, even hormonal changes at puberty or
menopause. One kind that is very visible is the change of temperament when a
head trauma occurs...we do have these rubrics of course which will guide
us. Also in cases of depression and grief, such change can occur...we also
need to understand that we cannot change the inherent temperament of the
person. If someone is sanguine in nature like Lachesis or Phosphorus, we
cannot expect to make a phlegmatic Pulsatilla out of this person. What we
do with homeopathy is what Jung said, "Make the person more complete, not
perfect!" This means that we obliterate the negative sides of this
temperament and strengthen the positive ones. As you can see, other
modalities such as psychology and TCM are wonderful tools in the hand of any
homeopath to get to know his patients better!
Warm regards
