Hippocratic Temperaments
Question: 'The four temperaments by Hippocrates (yes the father of medicine)
are Sanguine (corresponds to Fire in TCM), Phlegmatic (Earth type), Nervous
(water type) and Choleric or Wood type (Liver/gall bladder). The homeopath
if knowledge of this, and even more if he knows basics of TCM can greatly
use this for different reasons. First to find the simillimum. Second also to
see if a new layer is formed. ' Dr. Luc could you please point me to sources
where I might learn more about these 4 elements as pertaining to homeopathy.
Or is this more of a TCM concept? Thanks.
Answer: It is actually very helpful for the homeopath to know this. Some of
it is already explained in my book "Hahnemann Revisited" and more comes up
in my next text book (published this April), and then more in my next
book. So indeed the knowledge of Hippocratic temperaments and when they
change alert a practitioner to developing pathology. Whatever belongs to the
patient also teaches us their possible reactions to situations, tendency to
diseases, weaknesses of systems. Coupling this to the Elements in TCM,
gives us even more insight as now emotions and early symptoms of an
in balance in such persons are exposed. Getting more info about the patient
by applying excellent different modalities, gives the homeopath and the
patient more insight to what caused his illness. And the homeopath should
always start with himself!
